The Barkey plasmatherm is the innovative and user-friendly solution for warming standard blood and plasma bags. The patented heat technology allows dry warming and thawing of Fresh Frozen Plasma (FFP), erythrocyte concentrates (EK) as well as cryopreserved preparations (stem cells etc.) and infusion solutions.

    To make optimum use of the Barkey plasmatherm, up to four blood or plasma bags are placed between two cushions filled with water. During this process, the water is pumped into the cushions where it circulates continuously. This dry tempering process guarantees constant temperatures with minimal variations in accordance with the applicable guidelines for blood and blood products[1],[2],[3],[4].

    Product safety in accordance with hygiene guidelines is guaranteed, as the bag preserves are not in direct contact with the heating medium water (dry tempering). The cushions ideally conform to the shape of the preserves. Integrated moisture sensors detect leaks at an early stage and use visual and audible signals to alert the user to possible deviations. Visual inspection of the bag preserves by means of a transparent lid unit enables the monitoring of sensitive blood and blood products. The safety of the product and its biological value are permanently guaranteed by a preset temperature limitation.

    The user can choose between 5 preset programs for blood, plasma (FFP), HPC (stem cells), Octaplas[5] and a special user program.

    The Barkey plasmatherm also stands for sustainability. The product does not require any additional consumables. In accordance with the latest quality standards, the Barkey plasmatherm is manufactured according to ISO 13485 standards. The Barkey plasmatherm is also FDA cleared.

    Minimal risk of infection is ensured by the Barkey dry tempering process[1]. Nosocomial germs, as they can occur for example in open water baths, represent a potential danger for the patient or user, and can unnecessarily burden the hospital budget[2],[3]. The spokesman of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Krankenhaushygiene, Dr. Klaus Zastrow, has determined in a study that the profitability of a clinic can be significantly improved by reducing nosocomial infections. In Germany alone, there are 800,000-1,000,000 hospital infections annually, of which approx. 30-50% are preventable. The length of stay in hospital can be up to seven days longer, with a daily nursing charge of approx. 300€. Zastrow calculates that a reduction of 40% of infections could save approximately €400,000 per year per clinic[4]. The Barkey plasmatherm thus makes a valuable contribution to eliminating infections[5]. The British Society of Heamatology recommends the use of a dry tempering control device to thaw or warm blood and blood products to avoid the risk of infection[6].

    The Barkey plasmatherm is designed for simple and intuitive handling and offers additional operating features. Menu navigation in local language, short-cut programs and optional documentation software are available for selection.

    The short-cut programs for blood, plasma, HPC, Octaplas and user can be customized in terms of time and temperature (if compliant with current and national transfusion guidelines). The Barkey plasmatherm can be used in a temperature range between +37°C and +45°C (in the USA only up to +37°C).

    The cleaning effort for the user is also minimal. A water change of the Barkey plasmatherm is only necessary once a year. Regular wipe disinfection of the temperature chamber is recommended.

    Optionally, the Barkey plasmatherm offers the possibility of electronic documentation of the warming or thawing process. The Barkey TCP Logging Tool can be used to document barcodes, device users, time and temperature of the executed program, etc.
